Glamour portrait my way:

Cecil Beaton used unusual placement of portraits; a center rather small portrait will focus the eye and slow investigation of the surrounding areas imagery which supports the narrative of the portrait makes a strong contemporary image, a symmetrically placed portrait at bottom of frame almost demands the eye to investigate a large minimal background having the returning to the portrait, Beaton would also place a contrasting area in background to frame the portrait which is a good indication of his observation of all elements in the picture field. Beaton also used some advanced studio portrait lighting, like split-light from one side complimented with rim-light from the other as can be seen with his portrait of Katharine Hepburn above.
